Photos | National Train Day | McComb, Mississippi

McComb, the railroad-built town, celebrated National Train Day in a big way at the city's downtown railroad museum on Saturday, May 10, 2014. The Mississippi city was one of only 17 US cities to host an Amtrak "train set" which includes an engine, passenger, sleeper and dining cars. Kids, and adults, too, toured the Amtrak train as well as several cars that are part of the museum's permanent steam engine display.

Photos | McComb City Hall Centennial Celebration

McComb, Mississippi marked the 100th anniversary of its City Hall on May 10, 2014 with a celebration led by Mayor Whitney Rawlings that featured several of the city's past mayors and the Jubilee Performing Arts Center Choir. The ceremony commemorated the 1914 laying of the building's cornerstone. A fire in 1904 destroyed the original building. McComb was founded in 1872 by Henry Simpson McComb, the president of the New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern Railroad. As one of the nation's few company-built towns, it was planned and created to house the railroad's maintenance shops which were located in New Orleans.

McComb | The Town the Railroad Built Celebrates Its Past

Produced by Jim Albritton | Hundreds celebrated National Train Day in McComb, Mississippi at the city's award-winning railroad museum. They toured passenger, sleeper and dining cars on Amtrak's "City of New Orleans" train and the historic postal and office railcars just added to the Steam Engine 2542 display next to the city's depot. | Visit the McComb Railroad Museum online.

McComb, Mississippi was founded in 1872 after Col. Henry S. McComb of the New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern Railroad, a predecessor of the Illinois Central Railroad (now part of the Canadian National Railway), decided to move the railroad's maintenance shops away from New Orleans and the negative influence of the city's saloons.
